Questions
What are pelvic floor problems?
These include faecal incontinence, obstructed defaecation (difficulty in going to the loo), rectal prolapse and symptomatic rectoceles. Faecal incontinence can be a very distressing symptom. Managing the condition involves first investigating the causes, which may involve a scope test, and measurement of the strength of the anal sphincter.
What is Sacral Nerve Stimulation?
This involves placing a fine wire against one of the sacral nerve roots and applying very small amount of electrical current to the nerve, which has been shown to be helpful in improving incontinence symptoms.
What is obstructed defaecation?
Obstructed defaecation is difficultly in going to the loo with often a need to spend a long time on the loo and needing to frequently return to the loo. This is often investigated with a scope test and a proctogram (an X-ray test which shows what is happening when you go to the loo). The condition can be helped with nurse specialist education about straining techniques and if these fail sometimes surgery to correct a rectocele (a weakness of the front rectal wall forming a pouch into the back of the vagina) can be helpful.
What is rectal prolapse?
Rectal prolapse involves the rectum coming out of the anus to form a lump. This can be treated with a laparoscopic rectopexy procedure to hitch the rectum up from above, or by an operation done via the anus to concertina the rectum with stitches (Delormes procedure).
